Last night we went to the open house at Sam's school. The school served hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone. We ate, and then went to see Sam's classroom. I cannot say enough how highly we think of the school and the loving and dedicated teachers there. Sam has a most delightful teacher in Mrs. Flaming.

Below the students are giving a little taste of how they sing Macarana Months. Sam was so shy. He hid behind the other students and I could hardly get his picture taken.

Mrs. Flaming said they do a lot of learning to music.

Both boys enjoyed playing on the playground after we were in the classroom. Sam is in mid jump here if you click on the picture to see it larger. Dellen is climbing up the ladder straight through to the other side.

Sam's daily schedule follows this timeline. They work really hard all morning from 8:20 until after 11:00 when they take lunch. They come to school, and work on AR books and take the test from their AR (Apprehensive Reading homework book) from the night before. There are three computers in his classroom, and ten students. While the three take their tests, the others have book time at their desks. The flag salute is next, good morning song, calendar, weather, counting to 100, US map, world map - continents and countries. Song is again incorporated into a lot of learning these items. They work on phonics on the computer and then their phonics lesson. Whew, time for lunch and recess. When they come back in, they do their creative writing (or writing workshop) in their journals. PE and music follow. And math is next. At the very end of the day, Mrs. Flaming reads to them, and they do audio books at the listening station and partner reading.
Sam is a very gifted reader - what a blessing. He is enjoying reading and does well on his AR tests. After five tests with 100 percents, they move up to the next level. He is currently reading 1.8, which roughly means the end of first grade. He tested at the end of second grade. He is doing a level a week right now for the most part.
What a fun evening! While he was being shy during the song, he was very proud to show us around his classroom and what he has been working on.

Mrs. Flaming is an amazing lady. She has so much patience and energy! When I was a jr. in high school, I worked as an aide for her during my free hour and I loved it. I think those kids are seniors this year! That's hard to believe.
Sam is a lucky guy to have Mrs. Flaming. She is an great teacher and such a good person too.
Fun to have a reader in the house. That means you'll get to watch him enjoy lots of cool books. When will you start him on Hardy Boys? =)
